Ways To Tell If A Ruby Gemstone Is Real?

 Don't you just adore rubies?

This ruby stone is recognized as the "gem of love" and is linked with passion and intimacy. Rubies like diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires, are regarded as precious and valuable stones. They are also July birthstones.

If you have ruby jewelry you inherited or purchased, you must wonder if the stones are genuine or fake, as the market is flooded with imitation rubies.

Test For Rubies

The majority of people who own ruby jewelry don't know how to identify if a ruby is genuine, so you're not alone. Let's know about Rubies Test to check if ruby stone is real:

Try the Breath Test.

The ruby breath test needs you to exhale on its surface. If the fog disappears in a second or two, it's reportedly real; if it takes many minutes, it's fake. The problem with this test is that it can be quite incorrect because synthetic corundum behaves just like genuine corundum under such conditions.

Try the Flashlight Test.

Shine the light beam of a flashlight directly onto the surface of the ruby.

For this test, you can use the flashlight on your phone. A genuine ruby will glow or shine brilliantly. The light will flow straight through a fake ruby.

Using an Electronic Gem Tester

Use this test for rubies you already own. It can also be used to evaluate other valuable and semi-precious stones such as diamonds, jade, emerald, sapphire, and peridot. These machines are simple to operate. After calibrating the machine, you must press the ruby's surface with the included pen. The needle or indication will show it if it's a genuine ruby.

Price Test

Because rubies are costly and rare, they will set you back a lot of cost. If you think it's too cheap, it's probably not a ruby. Lab-grown or synthetic rubies are around 20% less expensive than natural rubies. Fake rubies, on the other hand, can be up to 90% less expensive than real rubies.

 The Rub Test

The rub test is similar to the scratch test in concept, except this time you're looking for residue rather than a scratch.

  • Step 1: Set your glass down on a flat surface.

  • Step 2: Gently rub the ruby on the glass.

  • Step 3: Look for red residue. With a hardness of 5, glass is softer than ruby. A genuine ruby will not leave any trace of its presence.

Ruby’s inclusions

Here are some of the most common ruby inclusions you must know before buying rubies:

  • Silk– These resemble fine silk fibers and rarely impact the color or clarity of the ruby. A lot of silk fibers can sometimes whiten the ruby, which makes it less valuable.

  • Needle– These are straight, long inclusions that look like scratches within the ruby.

  • Cavity– These inclusions look like tiny holes that go from the surface into the crystal. This makes rubies look unattractive and fragile.

  • Color zoning– While rubies are generally red, they do often have secondary colors. But because of inclusions, they may appear pink. Since it makes the color look uneven, cutters try to preserve the red parts as much as possible.

  • Fingerprints– These inclusions resemble fingerprints, but don’t worry about this. It’s still a real ruby and does have certain light performance issues.

  • Twinning– This happens when two crystals grow out of each other. Rubies are usually larger, and twinning can whiten the ruby.
